Gottlieber is an exclusive Swiss confectionery. Since its foundation in 1928, Gottlieber has been pleasing chocolate lovers with their unique Hüppen, a rolled wafer with delicious creamy filling. All ingredients are non-GMO, many are organic, fair trade (cacao & coffee) and free range (eggs).

I designed four different sleeves for the premium line, colour-coding the background to reflect the assortment – light/white for Coconut, cream for Amaretto & Irish Cream, brown for Chocolait, Cappuccino & Coconut and black/dark for Black Special Grand Cru.

In addition to these colors, the border and little Swiss cross were printed in gold, and the background pattern varnished with a transparent gloss.

A Festive Approach to Infographics

The Singapore-ETH Centre currently frames two research programmes – Future Cities Laboratory and Future Resilient Systems – addressing the challenges of modern societies in urban surroundings and beyond.

I elaborated a concept for visualisations bridging the scientific topic with the festive occasion. Each snowflake represents a country, with the size corresponding to its population size and the tone corresponding to the visualised data. For 2016 this was the percentage of urban population – the lighter the colour, the more urbanised, for 2017 it is the population density – the lighter the colour, the denser (with an inverted design for sake of variation).

The infographic is coded in D3, and generated with randomised parameters for the snowflakes, making each one unique.

The Future Cities Magazine is a magazine published bi-annually by the Future Cities Laboratory. It serves as a format to showcase research, edited for the general public. Articles are usually about four to ten pages long, allowing the authors to give detailed insights into their work.

The overall look is light and ‘airy’, focusing on maximum legibility and the display of large format images. The layout allows a flexible arrangement of type and images, text can either be set up in a main column and an ‘additional info’-column, or in two columns of the same width, while images can be placed more freely.

I designed miscellaneous products such as the ‘Morgensünde’ chocolate spread, the premium tea line and several tin boxes for their collections: the retro-tin ‘Gottlieben’ with the view of the lake and picturesque Gottlieben, the vintage ‘Arenenberg’-box, Gottlieber artist's tin Rolf Knie ‘Tigers’, and the decorative flower tins for spring and summer.

The logo and some framing elements were left unprinted, allowing the gold (or silver, respectively) of the tin box shine through. The nifty look is further enhanced by the embossing of these elements.

Urban Design Research Exhibition

Two research institutes – Future Cities Laboratory (ETH) and City Form Lab (SUTD) – presented their urban design research at the URA Gallery in Singapore.

The visual identity was kept clean and unobtrusive, complementing the content rather than distracting from it. As a reference to the urban design context of the exhibition space – the building stands at a 38° angle to north – I used the same rotation for the text of the invitation card.

The invitation was stamped in glossy black on off-white cardboard.

The ‘Orchestergesellschaft Zürich’ was founded in 1947 and consists of about 60 musicians. I was commissioned to design the visual identity from scratch.

The logo makes use of the fermata as a reference to music notation. The bracket symbolises community while the letters stand accurately apart as a reference to quality and precision. The ‘O’ forms the dot of the fermata. The logo-font is also used for headlines and complemented with a crafty serif font for best legibility.

For the visuals, I made use of the possibilities of generative design: I wrote a programme to generate «musical images», using notes instead of pixels. This allows the motives to be chosen freely while ensuring recognition of the visual language.

Innovative Technologies Exhibition Space

For the Swiss Positions + Swiss Scales Exhibition at the Korea Foundation Cultural Centre in Seoul, South Korea, researchers of the Future Cities Laboratory were invited to present their research on different aspects of innovative and sustainable technologies for buildings, including solutions for air conditioning, sustainable building materials and robotically fabricated concrete walls for material efficiency.

A stylised high rise building marks the center of the space. Red threads lead from the researched part (of the building) to the four respective projects displayed in white "windows". The building is laser cut on white and applied directly to the black wall. Each window shows two large, detailed images on photo paper plus smaller explicative pictures, bi-lingual project descriptions in English and Korean and a pod with clips.

In 2016, the tradition line was gently revamped. While the general layout (dark brown vertikal stripe on light background) remained, a lot of detailes were adjusted and modernised: the background colour (from a bright to a subtle yellow), the red ribbon, the background (new with the pattern similar to the premium line), and all information on the back (ingredients, address, etc.).

The logo is embossed and printed in gold, and the background pattern varnished with a transparent gloss.

Natural Ventilation Revisited

I designed and layouted the Special Issue of the Future Cities Magazine by the chair of Prof. Marc Angélil, edited by Sascha Roesler. It's a 166 page compendium of their research on Natural Ventilation in Singapore and on Sumatra.

It was a challenging task to assemble the very rich material, brush up the graphics and images, and layout the content in order to purposefully communicate the research findings.

The photographs of artist Katja Jug were printed full bleed on uncoated paper, contrasting the elaborate content full of details with a lavish and colourful insert.

The art collective agent provocateur rewarded CHF 20,000.– to a provocative project: to launch a cantonal referendum to lower the gauge of Lake Zürich. New public space would be created where now the private houses of the wealthy few stand.

The logo plays with the words ‘Meer’ (sea) and ‘Mehr’ (more), a drop of water made the third letter illegible. Visual metaphor is the map, and the contour lines reference to the change of topological occurrences. The pictograms are used illustratively as well as informatively and hint at what could be … The website contains a discussion forum and a section for fund-raising. Printed matter includes the official signature form, postcards and a contest.

The project was published in the book ‘Was uns ärgert und warum nicht’.

A teamwork at LOGLAN, Zürich

The Future Cities Laboratory led a forum at the World Cities Summit in Singapore, discussing and debating ‘5 Propositions for Sustainable Future Cities’.

I designed a series of five promotional postcards, one for each of the five lectures + the invitation card. To make the cards work as a series, I elaborated a system of lines which visually segments each card individually but follows certain parameters. Therefore it is possible to put each card next to another in no matter which direction with their lines connecting. When assembled, the yellow lines on black resemble a city grid by night.
